“Swiatek can be beaten with the right approach,” says Qinwen Zheng

Young tennis star Qinwen Zheng is one of the major players to watch out for in the coming years and she believes that Iga Swiatek can be beaten on hardcourts with the right strategy. Iga Swaitek, who added two grandslam titles to her credit in 2022, is currently ranked World No. 1 and is capping off an outstanding season of tennis.

Qinwen Zheng had previously faced Swiatek twice and lost on both occasions. One of their meetings include a game at the Roland Garros this year, where Swiatek emerged victorious comfortably on the clay court.

Swiatek went on to add a second Roland Garros title this year, having previously won the tournament in 2020 beating Sofia Kenan in the final. She was the first Polish player to win a grand slam and also the youngest since Rafael Nadal’s 2005 French Open triumph to win at the Roland Garros.

She added another major title in September when she was crowned US Open champion. She won in straight sets against Ons Jabeur in the final, making it three major titles to her credit at the age of 21.

However, the 20-year-old Chinese star believes there is a good chance for her to win against Swiatek on the hard surfaces, given she follows the right approach. She also asserted that she would be willing to do anything to do that in 2023.

“This year was really exceptional. She has very good spin on sand, it’s hard to beat her there, but on hard surfaces I think the girls with a different approach can beat her. I am looking forward to taking the place of one of the top players next year. I am truly willing to submit everything to this,” Zheng said.

Zheng reached a career-best 25th position in the WTA rankings this year and is looking forward to garnering some big successes on the tours. She has one WTA challenger title to her credit, but with plenty of experts comparing her to former Chinese grand slam winner Li Na, there is heavy burden on her shoulders to be the next big thing from Asia.
