Premier League 2022-23, Game Week 13, Sunday round-up – Newcastle stun Spurs, Arsenal held at St. Mary’s

It was a day of surprises in the Premier League, where we saw a couple of struggling teams register big victories whilst table-toppers Arsenal dropped two crucial teams. Newcastle United, who have been on the surge for a while now, registered a massive victory in North London Leicester City managed to drop out of the relegation zone.

The big results of Sunday involved North London clubs in action and in both cases, they were left disappointed. Arsenal traveled to the St. Mary’s to continue their golden winning streak in the league. In that pursuit, they got off to a stellar start with Granit Xhaka scoring an 11th-minute goal which had a stellar assist coming from Ben White, who ran a long way from defense to setup Xhaka.

However, in the second half, there was a surprise for the side. Stuart Armstrong’s equalizer came slightly against the run of play but the home crowd boosted Southampton to create more chances. Despite witnessing great chances towards the end, both sides could only share the spoils. This is the first draw registered by Arsenal this season, who also lost one game to Manchester United.

Newcastle United delivered a knockout punch to Tottenham Hotspur, who spilled some great chances throughout the game. A blunder from Hugo Lloris helped take the lead as Callum Wilson dinked it past a helpless keeper way off his line. Miguel Almiron danced his way through on the right wing to score his fifth goal in five games, doubling Newcastle’s lead.

Spurs had their temporary respite through a near-post header from Harry Kane but that was all they could manage. The Magpies had a fair share of chances to add a third but ended up picking three crucial points.

Aston Villa, who sacked Steven Gerrard after a string of poor results, emerged on top against Brentford in a stunning 4-0 victory. Leon Bailey opened the scoring in just two minutes and then assisted again in the seventh minute to let Danny Ings double their lead. Ings stepped up to take a penalty soon to make it three and Ollie Watkins fired it past David Raya in the second half to consolidate all three points.

In other results, Fulham delivered a surprising 3-2 victory at the Elland Road. Former Chelsea man Willian was on the scoresheet for the Craven Cottage unit, who had Andreas Pereira making two crucial assists. Leicester City delivered a big performance against Wolves away from home, winning 4-0. Jamie Vardy scored his first goal of the season coming off the bench, helping them go beyond the relegation zone.
