The January window is about to end and there isn’t a lot of time left for the clubs to get the signature of their targets if they haven’t done it already. While Chelsea are eying to make a British record deal to sign Argentine World Cup-winner Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, they are also looking to off-load some of the current players who are surplus to requirements.
Conor Gallagher is one such player, who might be falling way down the pecking order if Benfica agree terms for Fernandez’s transfer. Gallagher was previously approached by multiple clubs in the summer after a brilliant spell with Crystal Palace last season, but he looks definitely on his way out of the club.
Newcastle United, who are on the surge under Eddie Howe and are looking in a solid position to seal the top four position, have rekindled their interest in the player. Gallagher previously declined requests to join the Magpies as he wanted to make name at his boyhood club Chelsea, but with the opportunities trimming down further, he may show more interest towards a change now.
Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie suggested that Newcastle United, who haven’t won a first division title in nearly a century, are looking to sign the player before the deadline, but the player still remains adamant to stay in London and is happy with what he has.
“Newcastle remain interested in Conor Gallagher, despite being rebuffed previously. Chelsea need to offload players before deadline, but it remains to be seen if one is Gallagher, or indeed if Chelsea change tact & want to deal with Newcastle United. Gallagher understood to be happy at Chelsea.
Since Graham Potter took over as the manager of Chelsea, Gallagher has been a squad player this season and made just nine starts in the Premier League so far. A player of his quality might want to play more often and a loan move to Newcastle is another possibility to explore.
Chelsea are currently lurking at the midway point in the Premier League table and were out of both the domestic cup competitions early on. They are set to face Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League and not a lot of fans have shown confidence over Potter pulling off a Tuchel miracle (winning the CL in first season).
