Until Manchester United travelled to Liverpool earlier this month, they were significantly rising in title contention and were five points shy of league leaders Arsenal. However, in a dramatic turn of events, the side has gone on to drop points in two successive league games for the first time since the World Cup ended and are now certainly out of touching distance with the top spot.

However, much to the disappointment of the United fans, the side suffered yet another disappointing result over the weekend against Southampton, which finished 0-0 at Old Trafford.
The worst part about that result against the relegation-threatened Saints was the red card handed to Casemiro. The Brazilian midfielder’s tackle on Carlos Alcarez was initially given a yellow by Anthony Taylor, but VAR Andre Marriner turned it into a red, which led to the midfielder now getting a four match ban for collecting a second straight red this season. Casemiro was previously sent off against Crystal Palace for violent conduct against Will Hughes during an altercation between players. On the first occasion, Manchester United decided to not appeal against the decision and once again, it was confirmed by the club that they will not confront the PGMOL on this decision.
Casemiro will now miss matches against Fulham, Newcastle, Brentford and Everton, because it was his second red card of the season. They decided against lodging an appeal because they did not believe there was a strong enough case to be made for the decision to be overturned.
Erik ten Hag was asked about Casemiro’s sending off after the goalless draw on Sunday and he vented his frustration. He said: “It is inconsistent. The referees are coming at the start of the season with a policy: we are the Premier League, we want intensity and Casemiro, across European games, over 500, he never had a red card but now, twice. He plays tough but he’s fair.”
Manchester United will next face Real Betis in the Europa League second leg in Spain.
